The Big Lunch comes to Bude Sea Pool. Sunday 2nd June 2013

Bude’s community celebrates as part of the Eden Project’s Big Lunch

The tidal swimming Pool at Bude has been at the heart of the community for over 80 years. So FoBSP, the local charity which now funds and runs the Sea Pool, wanted to give locals and visitors a chance to get-together and enjoy themselves by the seaside as part of the Eden Project’s annual Big Lunch celebration on Sunday 2ndJune 2013.

Some 600 people stopped by during the day to swim, splash, snooze and smile. Heaps of people got their feet wet and sprawled in the sunshine; ate great grub and chilled out listening to the soulful singing of the GMC Choir, Tony Wade’s acoustic chums, and the Big Dog Boogie Band. The Sea Pool soon filled with inflatable dolphins, rubber rings and even a boat or two, all quietly watched over by the vigilant FoBSP lifeguards.

Sea Pool sponsor Life’s A Beach organised a bountiful barbecue serving fresh local produce, which contributed over £300 to the day’s takings. FoBSP were delighted to welcome ten new members to the volunteer group – annual membership costs just £10 and underpins the Pool’s finances. The FoBSP team were kept busy all afternoon, explaining the history of the historic Pool to newcomers and selling funky FoBSP pens and wristbands. In total, the day raised over £500 for the Pool’s ongoing renovation.

More importantly, the Picnic at the Pool provided a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors to relax and enjoy the Sea Pool’s facilities with added entertainment. One family even travelled down to Cornwall from London, just to join the party!

‘It was fabulous’ said Vicky Hawkins. ‘A wonderful first weekend at Bude.’

Local Tristan Bolitho agreed. ‘What a fantastic afternoon spent relaxing at Bude Seal Pool. I’ve not seen it that busy since the 1980s. Great music and lovely people. Congratulations and thanks to all those involved in the Save Bude Sea Pool campaign!’

Malcolm Mitchell echoed those sentiments: ‘What a fabulous afternoon it was – amazing community spirit – smiles all round – perfect!’

The Sea Pool is open every day throughout the year, tides and weather permitting, and it is FREE for all to enjoy. FoBSP lifeguards are present during peak periods in the summer.

The next FoBSP event at the Sea Pool will be a school’s raft race on June 22nd. Schools must prebook to enter (contact admin@budeseapool.org) but spectators are welcome to turn up on the day.
