Pool friends applauded at Rotary Club
Holsworthy Rotary Club members were delighted to have Fay Hargreaves and chairman Paul Tilzey from Friends of Bude Sea Pool as guests at their meeting to speak about the past, current and future of this iconic structure.
Paul Tilzey described the history of the pool and the work the group had put in to save it from the threat of being demolished in recent years.
In 2011 the friends’ committee took over the organisation and running of the pool, raising funds to meet health and safety regulations, arranging opening times and lifeguard cover for the pool.
Fay Hargreaves emphasised the value to the local community of keeping the pool as a working amenity for local people and visitors during the holiday season.
Last year the pool was used 50,000 times by individuals, some being local regulars and some visitors.
Fundraising and support is important to the friends and much has been provided in cash or in kind by the community — the subscription of £10 per year to become a friend has meant there are friends from all over Britain.
With additional support from Sport England, future development includes a water polo club, a new building providing changing spaces, storage and a community room to enable student groups to leave property safely in the dry while carrying out beach studies.
Fay and Paul were thanked by Rotarian Ray Hockin for their presentation, which was well received and applauded by the members.
